What is Sensorial?

  • Nature walk collecting different objects and observing.

  • Filling containers with rice, beans, pennies and have them match by shaking them.

  • Using paint swatches for the colors, or spools of thread in different colors.

  • Pieces of fabric in different textures (cut small).

  • Building with different size blocks.

  • Lifting something heavy and light.

  • Smelling different scents and tasting a variety of foods.

  • Creating a Mystery Bag at home. Putting an object in a pillowcase and having the child guess what's inside just from touch.

"In this area of the classroom, the child is able to explore the learning experience through their senses. They will be able to learn things visually and kinesthetically. The children will learn to distinguish between heavy and light, rough and smooth, light and dark, loud and soft, etc. These activities help the children become more familiar with their senses and instill in themselves a sense of accomplishment and self-satisfaction."

In the Montessori classroom, we use the Red Rods to teach visual discrimination in a concrete way. In other words, longest to shortest. All the rods are one color, red!

In order to adapt this to a home environment, other materials may be used that you have on hand.
Examples:

  • Sticks of various lengths

  • Pencils

  • Cut strips of paper

  • Wooden rods, cut

As long as the items are basically the same color, just different lengths will work.
The Red Rods have 10 rods in the set.
Have fun with this! Your child may even start finding items of different lengths at home, and on walks.

Sensory Bins

Sensory bins are a great way for kids to play and explore. They are easy to put together, and there are endless possibilities for the types of bins that you can create!
