Foods

There are so many delicious foods to eat in Costa Rica! They have lots of stands selling fresh fruit.

Some of their famous fruits:

Star Apple (caimito)

Purple on the outside and white on the inside, caimito is one of their favorite seasonal Costa Rican fruits. It looks like an apple on the outside and when you slice it open, you see the star-shape! This sweet treat is milky, sweet and creamy.

Passion Fruit (Granadilla and Maracuyá)

They have several different types of passion fruit in Costa Rica. There is the sweet ones: granadilla and the more tart version: maracuyá. You can eat this fruit with a spoon. You can also blend it to make a delicious juice! It's the size of a baseball with a crunchy shell and fruity jelly seeds on the inside.

Mango

Costa Rican mangos are unlike anything you've tried here in the USA. They're sweet and very juicy. You can pick them right off the trees!

Starfruit (Carambola)

It can be tart or every sweet. It looks like a star! It's really good to eat plain or add it to other foods like salads. It's perfect for a hot day.

Lychee and/or Rambutan

Mamón (lychee) and mamón chino (rambutan) can be smooth and green or red and spiky on the outside. To eat, you can crack it open with your fingers. It looks like a peeled grape! It's both sweet and tart.

Other foods:

Casado

A Casado is a Costa Rican meal using rice, black beans, plantains, salad, a tortilla, and an optional entrée that may include chicken, beef, pork, and fish.

Tamales

This dish consists of cornmeal that has been stuffed with pork or chicken that is wrapped in banana leaves and then boiled. They eat tamales on Christmas.
