Wednesday, April 8th Line Time: Stems

Writer's picture: EC1 TeachersEC1 Teachers

Hi boys and girls, it's Miss Jess! Last week we learned all about seeds. Today we're going to learn about the stems of a plant.

Stems are really important! I'm going to tell you all about them right here:

Parts of a stem:

Pictures of stems:

Stems we eat:

Also, asparagus:

And some of you may even eat green onions!

Science Experiment:

In this science experiment, I took some celery and cut them. I wanted to see how the celery (stem) soaked up the blue food coloring up to the leaves.

What you'll need:

  • Celery

  • Large glass or vase

  • Water

  • Food coloring

Steps:

  • Cut the bottom of the celery just a bit

  • Fill vase or glass halfway with water

  • Add a few drops of food coloring

  • Put the celery stalk carefully into the vase or glass

  • Wait and watch what happens!

Before

After

This was just a few hours after I put the celery into the vase! As you can see, the leaves are already turning blue and getting darker! I'm going to leave it over night to see what happens.

This was overnight:

If you do this experiment, please send us some pictures!

Movement Activity:

Miss Mara from EC3 shared with us a fun movement activity you can do with the parts of a plant! We know how you love this game, especially if you try and go faster.

Thank you, Miss Mara!

I hope you had so much fun learning about stems! If you're watering the plants around the house, see if you can find the stems! See you later friends.
