Good morning boys and girls! It's Miss Jess. The first day of spring is almost here! With spring arriving, we'll start to see lots of birds outside. We've been learning all about birds in EC1! Today we're going to be learning about nests and eggs!
I'm going to be reading Bird Builds a Nest by Martin Jenkins and illustrated by Richard Jones.
We're also going to to go over a few vocabulary words: twigs, nest, and eggs.
I really hope you enjoy this lesson today! Click the play button to begin.
Wow! Such a fun and interesting book. Here's a few follow-up questions about the story that were at the end of the book.
Think about it activity:
"Thinking about pushing and pulling When you try to move something away from you, it's called pushing. Can you find some places in the book where Bird pushes something? When you try to move something toward you, it's called pulling. Can you find some places in the book where Bird pulls something? Heavy things are hard for Bird to move. Can you name 3 things that are too heavy for you to move? Light things are easy for Bird to move. Can you name 3 things that are light enough for you to move? What happens when Bird drops a twig? Try dropping a small object, like a pencil. A force called gravity pulls it toward the ground!"
I'm so glad we learned more about what makes a nest a nest and why it's important. The nest helps to keep the eggs safe. Birds work so hard to make their shelter.
Here are some more pictures of nests and eggs:
I'll be reading another book about bird nests later this week titled: A Bird's Nest. It will be in our story time area. So keep your eyes open for that story!
To end the lesson, I want to share this beautiful video of a hummingbird building its nest. Nests come in many shapes and sizes; using twigs, but also other items in nature.
I hope you enjoyed today's lesson boys and girls! If you go for a walk with your family, play outside or look out the window during the day, keep your eyes open and do some "birding" to see if you can see a bird. It might be making its nest!
Have a wonderful day!
Love,
Miss Jess
